How Can I Help My Child?
Parent support is very important in the success of each learner. You can do a few simple things to support the learning your child does in the classroom. Read with your child each night. Students in the second and third grades will have a reading slip each night (Monday-Thursday). Please take time to listen to your child read. It might be helpful if you read the passage to your child and then let them read the passage back to you. Gently correct the reader if they have errors. For example, "Excuse me please, that word is 'gorilla'. Please read that sentence again." Fluency and accuracy will improve with this simple practice.
Kindergarten and first grade students will have sightword flashcards that need to be practiced throughout the week. They will also have some little books to read. Have them read these books a few times each time they come home. Calling a grandparent or neighbor so the child can read is fun for both the student and the listener.
Students in grades first - fourth will have an Accelerated Reader goal. First graders will not start the AR program until later in the year. Please encourage your reader to work toward reaching their goal. Set aside 15-20 minutes each night for your child to read their AR book. Check in with your child to see how they are progressing toward their goal. AR is an excellent way for each child to read at their level on topics that interest them.
Take time each night to read. The practice will help your child grow as a reader. If you would like more ideas on specific skills please contact me. I would be happy to help.
